Description

This is a very early ARCHIMEDES GMT modular display/ power reserve indicating wrist watch, it was made by BUCHERER at the turn of the 21st Century, and made in YG 18k. Model Reference: 2892-003 Serial No.226
During the early part of the 21st Century, Dubois-Depraz, along with their production partner Sellita, deserves credit by taking the lead on several projects that featured modular chronographs, and modular time pieces. It came at a time when there was a fire at the premises of ETA and knocked their production schedule for many years.
One of it's featured movements (This one here for eg.) has a wonderful simplistic module that sits on top of a ETA 2892-A2 - the power reserve indicator works in tandem with a series of smaller wheels that engages the main hour wheel of the movement below. To make this watch work perfectly, the hour wheel is fixed by a Horia tool, and is made in beryllium nitrate. Beryllium Nitrate is extremely hard, and survives the harshest elements, but it is also brittle like glass. Every time a service is done, the hour wheel is tossed in the bin. This is the nature of modern-day watchmaking. Luckily parts for a Dubois Depraz are more than freely available, one has to simplify these procurement tasks by looking at Swiss supply houses, here at our workshops we have a wonderful access to Dubois Depraz through our Swiss Trained partnership in Neuchatel.
What I love about the Archimedes- is the fact that it is a discreet Gentleman's watch. It hides well inside a shirt sleeve at 35 mm, yet it is not sleek, with a 10 mm thickness, but has 2 quite excellent features- the power reserve indicator and the GMT functionality.
As this modular watch was made in the 2000s, the GMT modular function is somewhat flimsy, the spring delivering the jump hour can get a little testy especially if you had to go backwards an hour or so, it sometimes does not fall correctly. For this reason, the Bucherer manual takes note that the hours must always be advanced, and never to go backwards, because going backwards disengages the spring in the modular portion of the GMT function. It corrects itself the minute you go forward, so it is a very well made and thoughtfully produced time piece of good quality.
The watch has a exhibition case back to admire the 28 jewels caliber, and features a Bucherer signed rotor weight and beautifully crafted movement decoration.
The strap is 100% Croco- with a 18k YG signed and stamped Bucherer buckle. The leather strap has a 7- 7 1/2 inches max size
Please note that I will do my best to provide a more accurate reading of the movement at the time a purchase request is made. The movement on July, 2023- is in super fine condition, but could do well with a new and fresh service.
