Colorful dials have been all the rage since the release of the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual models in 2020. While white dials are certainly easier to read, legibility isn’t everyone’s primary concern when it comes to selecting a watch these days. After all, are watches just for telling the time, or have they become more to us? A bold watch can make a statement about your personality; it can be playful or a sign of self-confidence. Certain colors can even evoke an emotional response in ourselves and others, meaning a watch with a colorful dial may actually elicit a greater response than a classic white-dialed beauty.
Objectively speaking, there is no such thing as the best dial color. It’s one of those things that comes down to personal preference. Do you like cooler or warmer tones? What mood are you going for? What suits your style? Experiment a bit and find the color palette that best suits your taste and wrist! Don’t shy away from trying loud or bright watches. Not only are you making a fashion statement, but you’re adding a splash of color to your life that you’re unlikely to regret.
We’ve selected six models that not only showcase how colorful the watch world is at the moment, but also how much joie de vivre a watch can convey.
Swatch Neon Flash Arrow
Swatch is likely one of the first brands to come to mind when you hear colorful watches. The brand has dedicated itself to producing so-called second watches – hence the name Swatch – that come in all sorts of colors and patterns. The neon line from the 1980s and 90s is legendary in its own right. Bright, eye-catching, and iconic, the series perfectly captures the era. Some models have since been reissued, but nothing beats an original from the 20th Century. Timepieces from this series have become collector’s items and a great, affordable way to show your passion for watches.
Casio G-Shock Rainbow
I think every collection needs a G-Shock next to their Swatch. Not only are these models cult classics, they’re also a bit of fun. I mean, just look at this rainbow-colored Casio G-Shock! While the metal look dims the brightness a bit, it gives the colors a beautiful sheen. The contrasting black strap makes it slightly less loud, but definitely suits the overall aesthetic. If you’re looking to make your first foray into the world of bright watches, the Casio G-Shock Rainbow is the perfect entry point both in terms of design and price!
NOMOS Tetra
Are you looking for something colorful but not too out there? Then you need to take a closer look at NOMOS. Watches from this brand are known for their minimalist Bauhaus designs, but many also feature colorful dials. For example, the NOMOS Tetra pairs a silver dial with a pink second hand and green-blue numerals. Sound like a crazy combo? Not at all. NOMOS has mastered the art of making even the most colorful dials appear elegant and tidy.
Chopard Happy Sport Love
Love is in the air? Well, at Chopard, it’s also on the dial. The Happy Sport Love model combines love and elegance in equal measure. The “LOVE” inscription may be reminiscent of the 1960s, but the watch is an absolute classic. As with all Happy Sport models, diamonds move freely between two sapphire crystals – the epitome of playful design! You won’t find a stronger statement of not taking things in life too seriously.
Rolex Daytona Rainbow
Rolex has numerous colorful watches in their portfolio, including the controversial puzzle dial, but none is quite as famous as the Rolex Daytona Rainbow. Here, the bezel is surrounded by 36 baguette-cut sapphires that sparkle in every color of the rainbow. Since every stone is individually set and perfectly positioned, they sparkle with incomparable brilliance. Haven’t seen one in the metal yet? Well, you’re definitely missing something magical. If you ever have the chance, let yourself be enchanted by the incredible play of light and color that unfolds in natural daylight.
Richard Mille RM 35-02 Rafael Nadal
Are all the watches mentioned above too run-of-the-mill for you? Then you may need to turn to Richard Mille (if your wallet allows). These extravagant masterpieces could have easily come back from the future. Thanks to the use of exclusive, often innovative materials, they are state of the art and durable. One of the brand’s most famous fans is tennis legend Rafael Nadal, who helped develop a special line of watches, lending it his name. The watches are incomparably lightweight, shock-resistant, and eye-catching. These timepieces are a step above in every way; you won’t believe it until you try one on.
Summary
After reading this, you may assume I’m just into colorful things, but if you take a look at my closet, you’ll find mostly black. My watches tell a different story, however; one full of (too many?) colorful Swatch and Seiko watches. I just can’t help myself. Whether it’s a summer highlight or a contrasting statement to a classy outfit, brightly colored watches with playful designs are some of my all-time favorite accessories.
