Social media is everywhere these days; not even the watch industry can escape its influence. This is perhaps best exemplified by Omega’s release of watches in honor of #speedytuesday. It all began in 2012, when Robert-Jan Broer, founder and editor-in-chief of the online watch publication Fratello Magazine, was on holiday in France. Robert-Jan had always been a fan of the Omega Speedmaster and had published a number of articles on the subject. On this particular Tuesday, Robert-Jan was wearing a Speedmaster and decided to take a photo of it. He shared it on Instagram with the caption “Happy Speedy Tuesday #speedytuesday.” Little did he know, 5 years later Omega would release a watch celebrating the Speedmaster community called the “Speedy Tuesday” Limited Edition. It was the first watch ever inspired explicitly by social media. Fittingly, Omega only sells these timepieces online. In this article, we’ll be taking a closer look at how the first two “Speedy Tuesday” Speedmasters have performed on Chrono24 since their release.

In 2017, the entire first run of 2,012 Speedmaster “Speedy Tuesday” watches sold out within 5 hours of their release. In the days that followed, people began selling their reserved timepieces even though delivery was still months away. Prices for the Speedy Tuesday sat roughly 30% above the retail price for several months after the launch. While they had dropped off slightly one year later, the watch was still selling for well above its retail price. The announcement of a second Speedy Tuesday watch triggered another round of price increases; the average first-edition “Speedy” is valued at €8,000 as of May 2019.

The second Omega Speedmaster “Speedy Tuesday,” the “ULTRAMAN”, followed just over a year later. It was also limited to 2,012 pieces and sold exclusively online. However, it managed to one-up its predecessor by selling out within 2 hours. In the immediate aftermath of its release, prices went as high as €9,471 before settling between €7,600-7,800. As of the publication of this article, the average sales price is over €7,500, which is still significantly more than the original retail price. Of the two Speedy Tuesday models, the first edition appears to be slightly in the lead in terms of value, costing €300 more than the second edition on average.
