Launched at BaselWorld 2014, the Oktopus MoonLite created a splash. Its otherworldly, iridescent glow mesmerised visitors to Linde Werdelin’s stand. And now, having completely sold out, its successor is emerging from the depths. This is the Oktopus MoonLite – White, a timepiece that comes with camouflage as standard.
The Oktopus MoonLite – White presented Morten Linde, creative mind of Linde Werdelin, a chance to revisit the entire design of the 2014 release. The most noticeable of these is the white bezel its name alludes to, but further refinements are contained within.
“Due to the unusual appearance of ALW, before we launched the Oktopus MoonLite I was uncertain about how it would be received,” admits Morten Linde. “But when we saw the positive response to it, we knew it was something we wanted to revisit. Returning to the design is a chance to change not only one thing, but to re-evaluate it as a whole timepiece and tweak multiple elements.”
The new bezel is a major part of this transformation. The white ceramic, with circular satin finishing, both contrasts with, and complements, the ALW case, bridging the gap between the white rubber strap and satin-finished silver-white dial to enhance the holistic three-dimensional design experience.
In the redesigned dial, it’s all about the small details, the ones that can still amaze after years of wearing the timepiece. The upper dial has been reworked and skeletonised further, opening up more elements, including a second aperture at the 10/11 o’clock position. This allows the wearer to readily see more phases of the moon and more easily plan ahead for the full moon, an important part of the Linde Werdelin Universe.
The in-house moonphase complication is contained within a five-layer dial, the elements of which have varying finishes, a small but significant detail. For instance, the spaces between the photorealistic phases of the moon are filled with a perlage effect, representative of the stars in the night sky, sparkling as they catch the light perfectly.
“The moonphase to us has real meaning. As divers, it helps us plan our next moonlit dive adventure under the full moon,” reveals co-founder Jorn Werdelin. “Meanwhile, the octopus is a creature you would barely believe existed without photographical proof. It has eight arms, incredible speed and projects ink, but, most fascinatingly, it can change colour. This intrigued us, and we are delighted we could mimic this in the Oktopus MoonLite – White.
”The colour-changing properties of the Oktopus MoonLite – White are a feature of its ALW case. ALW, or Alloy Linde Werdelin, an aerospace material, will absorb light from its surroundings and subtly reflect them back unto the world, helping it seamlessly adapt to its environment much like its deep-sea dwelling namesake, the octopus.
